Sunglasses, swimsuit, sunscreen… You’re ready to go on vacation! But have you considered travel insurance ? If it is optional most of the time, subscribing to one can save you from unpleasant surprises! What is it for ? How to choose it well? LeLynx.fr explains 5 things you need to know abouttravel insurance for a departure with peace of mind!
1/ Travel insurance protects you in the event of the unexpected
Travel insurance is a contract that allows you to compensate in the event of a problem during your stay. It may as well concern a health problem one incident of another nature such as the theft of your luggage, for example.
By opting for travel insurance, you can therefore be protected in the following cases:
- Trip cancellation : this guarantee allows the reimbursement of expenses if you cancel your trip;
- Baggage loss : this cover compensates you in the event of theft, destruction or loss of your luggage and personal property;
- medical expenses : this cover pays for your medical care in the event of illness or accident;
- repatriation : this guarantee covers the costs of repatriation to your country, including in particular air tickets, in the event of serious health problems;
- Civil liability : this guarantee protects you in the event of material or physical damage caused to third parties.
2/ Travel insurance is not compulsory… but highly recommended!
You are not required to purchase travel insurance unless you are planning to travel to certain countries such as China, Algeria, Mongolia, Russia or Cuba.
Outside these countries, travel insurance is optional. However, it is strongly recommended to subscribe to one. Indeed, you are not immune to having an accident or falling ill. So, while travel insurance is an additional cost in your vacation budget, it allows you to make savings in the event of a problem during your trip, which is not negligible!
3/ You can benefit from travel insurance using your credit card
In some cases, it is possible to benefit from a travel insurance with your credit card. This offers guarantees such as the medical repatriation and the reimbursement of medical expenses.
For example, the Visa and Mastercard cards insure your trip for a stay of less than 3 months (90 days).
Be careful, however: most travel insurance contracts by credit card are not sufficient to properly insure your stay. The reason for this: limited ceilings and the few guarantees proposed. This is why it is more interesting to take out a travel insurance contract with a specialized agency.
4/ Travel insurance is useful for holidays but also for long-term stays
This type of insurance is useful whether you are going holidaysfor your studies or in business trip as part of work. Indeed, the longer you stay, the more you risk having medical expenses, for example. There are thus formulas for stays of more than 3 months which allow better coverage than stays of less than 90 days.
5/ Health insurance does not replace travel insurance
If travel insurance can cover medical expenses, it should not be confused with health insurance.
Indeed, the health insurance covers your health expenditure if you fall ill or are hospitalized during a stay in Europe. For this, you must present your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) during your visit to a health professional or hospital. You will then be compensated according to the legislation in force in the country.
However, if you are traveling outside the European Union, travel insurance can be useful to you in the event of an accident or illness. Furthermore, it is important to choose your contract according to the destination you are going to. For example, medical costs in the United States, Japan and Australia are very high. It is therefore necessary to opt for travel insurance that covers the medical care.
And now, you can now go on vacation with peace of mind!
