Apple Pay Works in Microsoft Edge in Latest iOS 16 Beta

You can now use Apple Pay in Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, provided you’re bold enough to try Apple’s betas and iOS 16 beta 4 (via The Verge.) This is a major change, because, Outside of apps, Apple Pay payment on iPhones with iOS 15 is currently limited to the Safari web browser.

This was first spotted by Steve Moser on Twitter, who is a contributing writer at MacRumors. You can see in his Tweet above that he uses Microsoft Edge and has a “Continue with Apple Pay” button on the Apple Store webpage. Firefox users also have a similar feature on iOS, as reported on Reddit, even though it was since iOS 16 beta 3.

So what is causing this change? Well, all major browsers on iOS use the Safari Webkit rendering engine, which has probably been updated to support Apple Pay in third-party browsers. Apple has yet to officially respond and explain the change, though The Verge suggests it may be to avoid lawsuits in Europe and the United States. This does not apply to macOS, as desktop web browsers may use their own rendering engines.
