At 70 euros, is the Amazon Prime subscription still worth it?

Amazon Prime increases its price from September 15. But with priority deliveries, a video, music and e-book service, subscribers should still save money.

It is an email that has pissed off many customers. On July 26, Amazon Prime subscribers discovered that the price of the e-commerce giant’s service was going to increase. From September 15, it will be requested 69.90 euros per year or 6.99 euros per month against 49 euros or 5.99 euros currently.

But Amazon Prime is not just about priority delivery of your online purchases. The subscription gives you access to Prime Video, to watch movies and series, to Amazon Music Prime, to listen to songs, or to Prime Gaming, to receive video games each month and subscribe to a streamer on Twitch.

BFMTV therefore does the calculations to find out if, depending on your use of Amazon Prime, the service is still worth it despite its price increase.

  • I shop online

First scenario, Amazon Prime only serves you in the context of e-commerce. You get free priority delivery with your subscription. This option is charged 7.99 euros to non-Amazon Prime subscribers. Despite the price increase, the annual subscription is interesting from nine purchases in the year. For a monthly subscription, you would have to checkout twice a month to see a profit.

  • I watch series and movies on Prime Video

Prime Video is the cheapest on-demand video platform on the market. Its main competitors, Netflix and Disney +, display an entry ticket at 8.99 euros per month. This is two euros more than the monthly subscription to Amazon Prime. Over the year, you therefore earn 24 euros, and even 37.98 euros if you opt for the annual subscription. Of course, this calculation does not take into account the exclusivity of each of the platforms, but only access to a streaming service.

  • I read digital books on my tablet

The Amazon Prime subscription is also Prime Reading. This service provides all holders of a Kindle tablet with books in digital format. With more than a thousand novels, thrillers and thrillers, Amazon’s offer saves between 0.99 and 7.99 euros per book. Taking a low average of 2.99 euros, the price of your subscription to Amazon Prime will be reimbursed as soon as you read 24 books, i.e. two per month. We must also take into account the more recent releases which display a higher purchase price and therefore mechanically reduce the number of readings before reaching a certain profitability.

  • I listen to streaming music

With Amazon Music Prime, it is possible to listen to a catalog of two million titles included in the Amazon Prime subscription. Despite hundreds of playlists or an offline mode to download the songs on its application, the offer struggles to compete with the paid version of the Amazon Music Unlimited service. Not included with Amazon Prime, this offer at 9.99 euros (the same as for Spotify or Deezer) per month increases the number of titles available with HD quality to 90 million. This service is therefore an additional advantage, but not a purchase argument for engaging with Amazon Prime.

  • I play video games and watch Twitch

Last reason for subscribing to Amazon Prime, access to Prime Gaming. This service dedicated to gamers offers monthly video games. In July, four games are offered for a total purchase price of 72.46 euros. Or more than the annual subscription to Amazon Prime after its price increase to 69.90 euros. In addition, the annual Prime Days offers and promotions event last July 12 and 13 allowed to collect 30 additional titles for free.

Finally, Prime Gaming allows Twitch viewers to support one creator each month. A subscription to a channel of the live streaming platform is thus offered to all Amazon Prime subscribers. This allows a saving of 3.99 euros each month, or 47.88 euros over the year.

  • I use Amazon Prime as much as possible

Let’s take the example of a person wanting to use his subscription over a month. He makes a purchase on Amazon in priority delivery (7.99 euros), watches a few films and a series (6.99 euros), reads a book in Kindle format (2.99 euros), supports his favorite streamer (3.99 euros) and collects two of the games offered via Prime Gaming (about 20 euros). The saving made would be 41.96 euros.

On paper, Amazon Prime therefore gives access to a swarm of services. However, you must consider your own use before subscribing to the service. But as our example shows, the most greedy users will continue to pay off their subscription in a few weeks.
