When towing, the most important point is to be insured for the towed vehicle: you need at least civil liability, insurance that will be able to compensate a third party if you have a collision. We are not talking here about repairing your trailer; this requires additional options.
Second point, the weight of the trailer. If it weighs less than 500 kg loaded, you are in principle covered under the civil liability guarantee of your car insurance contract. However, it is better to call your insurer (or read your contract carefully) to be sure that in the event of an accident, you are well covered.
You will report the registration of the towing vehicle on the police plate.
More than 500 kg: specific insurance
We remind you that from 500 kg, a trailer or a caravan has a specific registration, and therefore an insurance which covers it.
Be careful, avoid towing a trailer whose specificities are not provided for in your car insurance or in your driving licence: up to 3.5 t for the car plus trailer/caravan combination, this is license B; from 3.5 t to 4,250 t, license B + training B96.
Beyond 4,251 kg, it is the E license, a real license that must be passed.
Term insurance
In the case of a loan, you can insure a trailer (over 500 kg), a caravan (or a camper) for vacation time or according to your needs thanks to a temporary insurance contract because the towed vehicle must be insured at least in civil liability.
The temporary contract makes it possible to insure a vehicle for a limited period, unlike permanent classic insurance. Term insurance covers a vehicle for a period, to be defined with your insurer, ranging from 1 to 90 days.
