It’s soon the big departure on vacation. Good news ! And to travel from town to town, from beach to beach or in charming surrounding areas, perhaps you have planned to rent a vehicle? If so, think carefully about the insurance you choose. Civil liability, damage or theft insurance, we take stock to help you leave with peace of mind.
The trees are in bloom, the legs are uncovered in the streets, the windows are open at night, no doubt, summer has arrived. And who says summer says, for the vast majority of French people, holidays. Since the health crisis, many have decided to trade distant lands to criss-cross the cities of France and Europe. Very often, to ensure more freedom and independence, vacationers choose to rent a vehicle. In the same way as your personal car, the rental must be insured. The tenant must be covered by a liability insuranceotherwise, he may receive a financial penalty of up to €3,750 and a 3-year license suspension. You would have understood it, getting insurance even for a short time is not an option. Fortunately, the lessor is obliged to provide a contract in which the civil liability of the tenant is covered. Thus, the driver is covered, in France and abroad, in the event of material damage and bodily injury caused to a third party, including the passenger(s). This is called thethird party insurance.
What are the additional guarantees?
Depending on the contracts, other guarantees may be offered. This is why it is always important to check the different clauses. First of all, know that with your bank card, you benefit from a service ofCar Insurance. However, remember to look carefully at the conditions of application, in particular with regard to the country in which you are renting the vehicle. If you don’t want to take any risks, you can take out damage insurance that will cover you in the event of an accident or theft. You can opt for a guarantee for the bodily protection of the driver or a passenger. The latter ensures the payment of a lump sum in the event of disability and/or death. When you subscribe to additional guarantees you will, in most cases, be able to take advantage of a franchise buyout. This means that if you are the victim of a theft or an accident, the excess may be partially or even fully reimbursed. A great advantage since the latter have a relatively high cost.
If your rental vehicle encounters difficulties such as a breakdown, the rental company is obliged to change the car or reimburse you. If you are the victim of a theft, you will absolutely have to declare it to your rental company and, of course, file a complaint which you must send to the latter within 48 hours of the event. The period rises to 5 days in the case of an accident. However, if you are the victim of a theft, an accident or any situation while being under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, the guarantees (even optional) will not apply. Regarding small incidents such as a flat tire or the loss of the key, this time it is up to the tenant to take charge of the repair. To avoid any dispute between the lessor and the driver, remember to check the vehicle during the inventory before and after returning the keys and take photos if necessary.
