New cars: the number of sales down in July

According to data reported by the Automotive Platform, new car sales fell 7% in July 2022 compared to last year. A decline that has persisted in the auto market since the beginning of the year. What explains this decline? Which manufacturers are most affected? LeLynx.fr returns to this auto data.

A drop in new vehicle sales

New car registrations in France fell by 7.06% in July 2022 compared to July 2021. This is what the Automotive Platform (PFA), which represents companies in the automotive sector, announced on Monday. In total, these are 107,547 new vehicles which were registered for individuals last month. The automotive sector had already experienced a drop in 14.2% in June and of 10.1% in May.

Indeed, since the beginning of 2022, the automotive market has been in decline. This drop is estimated at 15.31% with, in all, 879,527 registrations of cars. Low figures while the year 2021 was already in sharp decline. It is explained by shortages of electronic components as well as delivery problems.

Which manufacturers are most affected by this decline in new car sales?

Some automakers have seen a bigger drop in new car sales than others. This is particularly the case of Stellantis which brings together the Peugeot, Citro├źn, DS Automobiles and Opel brands. In fact, the company recorded a decrease of almost 19.85% compared to the same period last year.

Renault-Dacia, France’s second-largest auto seller, experienced a drop in sales of 8.72% since the start of 2022. For other manufacturers, the decline is estimated at 25.52% for Volkswagen, 10.87% for BMW and 18.66% for Toyota.
